GMCH surgeon bags a rare honour- makes the nation proud

In a positive development that is set to bring a lot of cheers to the medical fraternity of the state, Gauhati Medical College’s Associate Professor of Surgery Dr. Purujit Choudhury was honoured with the D.Sc. (Doctorate of Science) degree making him the first in the nation, second (after Dr. ST Fan of China) in Asia and fifth in the world to hold the prestigious degree. D.Sc. (Doctorate of Science) is an academic research degree awarded in recognition of substantial contribution to scientific knowledge beyond that required of a Ph.D. 

Dr. Choudhury was conferred the degree on 27^th April 2016 for his pathbreaking research on  “A Prospective Clinical Analysis of Carcinoma of Pancreaticobiliary System (extra hepatic) and its management”. He had been strenuously working for the same since 2008. The Gauhati University had nominated famous Gastroenterologist Dr. Nobuyasu Kano from Japan and Dr. Patta Radhakrishna from SIMS hospital Chennai  as external examiners for his screening. 

Dr Purujit Choudhury did his early schooling from Arya Vidyapeeth ,  his HS from Cotton College, and his MBBS and PG(surgery) from Gauhati Medical College. He completed his Ph.D. in 2005 and has been the Ph.D supervisor himself under Gauhati University since 2006 training several students under him since. Dr. Choudhury is a reciepient of many national and international fellowships and specializes in Gastrointestinal Surgery.

Dr. Purujit Choudhury is an inspiration for many of us in the medical field and we are honoured to be his students. While we know the health condition in the state is grim and research opportunities are not ample enough due to paucity of resources, Dr. Choudhury stands as a shining star in the midst of us all, he stands by the saying "all our dreams can come true if we just have the courage to pursue them". His example will surely inspire a lot of us. We, the student of Gauhati Medical College are proud of you, the state is proud of you and above all the nation is proud of you “sir”.
